The rules

  • ✔Every rank-and-file employee who worked at least one month in the year gets it, whatever the job, pay scheme or status.
  • ✔It's one-twelfth of the basic salary you actually earned in the calendar year. Overtime, holiday pay, night differential and allowances aren't included, unless your company counts them.
  • ✔Your employer must pay it on or before 24 December. Some pay half in June and half in December.
  • ✔Resigned or let go during the year? You still get it pro rata, in your final pay.
  • ✔It's not the same as a Christmas bonus: the 13th month pay is required by law.
